 Born on a Blue Day
Back to Full Blog

The Daniel Tammet biography, Born on a Blue Day, is a fascinating book. He's an autistic savant, and high-functioning. The book is a sensitive telling of his struggles with Asperger's Syndrome and early epilepsy, his amazing mental powers, and his successful attempts to build an independent life. He is a Christian, and the last chapter, where he tells about his conversion and explains his approach to worship, is simply beautiful.

Zoomer,

I have to confess I have never heard of this book - it sounds very interesting

It really is. He's a remarkable man. One of his mental feats was to memorize and recite the number pi to over 20000 digits. But the amazing thing to me was his ability to develop emotional ties and religious faith.

I was reading about Asperger's this month. It was by a columnist for Harper's that had it but wasn't diagnosed until way into his adulthood. Fascinating. About 3/4 of the way through, I had convinced myself that I had it too....so I put the magazine down.

Hey T, thanks for coming by! I've been out of touch. Hope you're well. One thing Tammet talks about in the book is that he thinks everyone has some autistic and some savant traits and it just manifests itself more in some. The other interesting thing about him is that once he started developing emotional capacity he realized that he is gay. He has a very happy life with his partner, who is wonderfully supportive.
